Notwithstanding LBJ's comments about the beautiful serene Texas Hill Country,
it is also a wonderful birding destination. The Frio Canyon is a
somewhat narrow canyon very lush with oaks and cypress, and "a river runs through
it" -- a crystal clear spring fed river! We are a nesting area for the black
chinned hummingbird, and situated at the convergence of the Pacific and Central migratory
flyways just above Mexico.
We see some ruby throated hummers migrating during spring and fall, and
Monarch butterflies coming through, but we mostly feed the black chinned hummer. In past
years during summertime we have hung five 32 oz. Tejas feeders at our home on the Frio and filled
each of them daily!... lots of hummers!
